Cross-platform screenshot and upload companion app for Emberly, built with Tauri.
Why it exists#
Uploading to Emberly from a browser works, but screenshots should be one keypress: capture, upload, link on your clipboard. Flicker is the desktop companion that does exactly that.
What it does#
- Screenshot capture of one screen or all monitors, from global hotkeys
- Instant upload to your Emberly account, with the link copied back to your clipboard
- Clipboard uploads of whatever image you've already copied
- Upload history with search, filters, previews and bulk actions
- System tray and desktop notifications, so it stays out of the way
- Sign in with your Emberly account or an upload token, with several built-in themes
How it's built#
Tauri with a React and TypeScript frontend and a Rust backend for the native parts, such as capture, hotkeys and the tray. It ships native installers for Windows, macOS and Linux.
What I learned#
Cross-platform doesn't mean cross-compiled. Tauri uses each OS's own webview, which keeps the app small. But a Windows machine can't build a macOS .dmg or a Linux package, so every platform has to be built natively. The release workflow builds on all three in CI.
